The Camera Lucida, or Chambre Claire in French, was widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was constructed entirely of metal and was considered both a scientific and an artistic instrument. This one in my collection is a classic Chambre Claire Univeselle by P. Berville.

Chambre Claire Universelle by P. BERVILLE. Also known as a Camera Lucida. This instrument was used a drawing aid, enabling artists to draw perfect perspectives from nature. Finely plated nickel on brass with 3 extensions, the last having a rack and pinion focusing mechanism.

Looking downwards through the very edge of the prism, the subject is seen the correct way up on the drawing surface, as shown in the above photos.
