Bamford is difficult to categorise geographically, for although its railway station lies on the Hope Valley Line the village is not strictly in the Hope Valley; it is the sole survivor of three original villages in the Upper Derwent Valley - the other two, Ashopton and Derwent having been drowned sixty years ago by the waters of the Ladybower Reservoir, opened by King George V1 in September.

The view in 1966. Bamford station was built by the Dore and Chinley Railway, a company which was absorbed by the Midland Railway prior to opening. The line was opened for goods traffic on 6 November 1893, and for passenger trains on 1 June 1894, but Bamford station was not opened until 25 June that year. The Dore and Chinley line later became.
